#Time2Sketch
HUT took part in the Architects Benevolent Society's annual sketching competition #Time2Sketch. With an hour to respond to the theme 'My Home from Home', Andy drew the view of St Michael's Mount from Marazion in Cornwall; Mikey drew a Filipino kamayan feast with his dog stealing sausages; and Sophie drew a day off at her brother-in-law's renovated house, where the dogs are allowed on the sofa. Winning entries will be featured in a colouring book to raise funds for the charity.

Construction Underway in Bloomsbury
Site works are underway at our office retrofit and extension scheme in Bloomsbury. Temporary works are in place ready for partial demolition to begin.

Build The Way Traineeship
HUT have partnered with GPAD to co-steer the Build The Way Traineeship for 2023. We believe that there should be more alternative and accessible routes into careers involving architecture, design and shaping our cities. This will impact the way our homes, workplaces and communities develop in years to come. The nine month program offers the London Living Wage based on a 32-hour working week, with no experience-based barriers to application. Instead, places are offered to those who can show a passion for design and cities and who want to pursue a career in the industry. You can view more about the opportunity here.

NLA’s Circular London Report
The NLA's Circular London Report launched at The London Centre on Friday 14th July, featuring HUT's Forest Garden as a case study alongside essential research and other inspiring schemes. Our Forest Garden Toolkit is downloadable for free and we are available to discuss future sites on forestgarden@hutarchitecture.com.

The Mayor’s Fund Apprenticeships
HUT attended an inspiring event by The Mayor's Fund for London as part of the Diversity Pledge campaign. HUT are proud to be a built environment Employer Partner, working to actively level the playing field for young Londoners to access a wide range of career opportunities. We heard from a panel of talented young quantity surveyors, accountants and property managers who shared their experiences about apprenticeships, a fruitful pathway yet not widely accessible. We support the growth of vocational options in architecture. Thank you to JLL for hosting.

Options Day
Rachael and Fenella participated in Options Day at Plashet School, East Ham, where they helped to deliver interactive workshops. Students took on the task of redesigning HUT's current studio and ideas included wellbeing areas, solar energy sources and genderless washrooms. Thank you to our education partner Inspire for organising the day. The workshop sits within HUT's broader long-term strategy to support young students in the Hackney area through work experience and varied events.

The Forest Garden Toolkit
Our Forest Garden Toolkit is now available to download for free here. The toolkit offers simple guidance on applying the circular strategies of our Forest Garden project to other sites to create climate resilient, biodiverse and educational interventions for local communities. We are in dialogue with London Boroughs and available to discuss potential sites for the next Forest Gardens. If you have an idea, do get in touch using forestgarden@hutarchitecture.com.

HUT’s Summer Party
This year’s theme was ‘Work In Progress’ and as such the event was hosted on site at a current live project in Farringdon. HUT are currently working on £28m of multi-unit housing projects and £42.5m mixed-use projects, within which we have been shortlisted for 3 awards so far this year. Thank you to all that came.

Farringdon Offices
HUT's redesign of a former record company HQ for a new client is complete. Previously disconnected offices stacked over a very tight footprint have been unified around a winding staircase, linked by a communal tea point, meeting booth and simplified WCs.

Dusty Knuckle Youth Fundraiser
We had a fabulous time at The Dusty Knuckle Youth Fundraiser. On their Dalston rooftop there was food by chef Troy Cundy, special guests, an auction, live music & a DJ. We heard from Dusty Knuckle's trainees about how their journey with the bakery has transformed their lives. The bakery's programme provides meaningful work in a busy commercial environment for young people aged 18-25 who face significant barriers to getting their careers underway. The bakery was HUT’s first pro bono project which involved securing planning permission and designing the fit-out for the new bakery and cafe space. We are keen supporters of the organisation. There’s still time to donate to the Youth Program via the Dusty website.

Women In Architecture
HUT joined a fascinating event hosted by Women in Architecture UK on 'Healthy (Work)places for Women'. The discussion touched on the support offered by architectural practices and architectural design itself for the mental and physical wellbeing of women architects. It was shown how poorly appointed architecture perpetuates inequality. Thank you to the brilliant panel for kick-starting this long and complex conversation.

Clerkenwell Planning Win
We have secured an ambitious planning win in Clerkenwell for a double-height retail, restaurant or showroom space to a courtyard set beneath a timber-framed living roof.

The Forest Garden for NLA’s ‘Circular London’ Report
The Forest Garden has been selected as a case study for NLA’s ‘Circular London’ report which highlights practices and initiatives pushing boundaries in London’s circular building economy. The garden replaces large areas of impermeable tarmac, reuses discarded building aggregate and adopts a recycled rainfall system. With a number of new trees and uniquely designed insect habitats, the garden enhances local biodiversity and provides a new green space for local residents. Join us at the showcase on 14th July at The London Centre to celebrate with other practices championing circular design.

ABS Chicken Run 2023
Well done to Andy, Pramila, Todd and Marta who ran the Architects Benevolent Society's 2023 Chicken Run. Todd came third overall! The team exceeded their fundraising target but if you want to donate to a great cause, you still can here. Thank you!

William Ellis School
As part of Inspire Education Business Partnership's #worldofwork programme, Rachael and Fenella spent the day at William Ellis School with Year 10 students, preparing them for the professional workplace ahead of their work experience this summer. The students partook in a series of workshops focused on careers and aspirations, transferable skills and training. The day concluded with a problem-solving task to design a building which could withstand a flood, a volcanic eruption of lava and a zombie chicken apocalypse to test their team-working and communication skills.

HUT Delivers Primary School Workshop
As part of Inspire Education Business Partnership's #worldofwork programme, Andy and Sophie spent the morning with 45 primary school children at NLA’s The London Centre discussing how architecture is made. The children were particularly excited by the NLA’s scale models of the city, identifying London’s many iconic buildings, and understanding how different areas have changed over the years. There was a discussion about the design process and a quiz on some other famous buildings throughout the world. The day closed out with the children working in groups to design sustainable building types - schools and football stadia being the prevalent types!

Bloomsbury Planning Permission
HUT have secured planning permission for 37,000sqft of office retrofit and extension to a series of Listed Buildings in the heart of the Bloomsbury. The scheme works with the plan-form of a Georgian townhouse, restoring orientation and hierarchy among three connected properties, a corresponding mews building to the rear, and a light, garden-like link structure in between. Cellular offices are transformed into sociable workspaces with new open floorplates, pavilion extensions of mass timber construction, and a series of roof terraces.

Topping Out
Construction works top out at our Clapham South development of 36 residential dwellings upon the site of a disused car park adjacent to the common.

6 Gracechurch Street in the Mixology23 Awards
6 Gracechurch Street has been shortlisted for the Mixology23 Awards in the Project of the Year Workplace Interiors (30,000 to 70,000sqft) category. 6 Gracechurch Street frames the post-pandemic urban workspace as a place where individuals choose to meet. Complimenting remote working practices, this traditional office building evolves to offer unique benefits and celebrate its central location of plentiful amenities.

HUT Prepare Young People for Work
As part of HUT's JEDI strategy, we engage with a number of work experience sessions and placements to help our local community and boost social mobility within the construction industry. Here are Rachael Davidson and Fenella Ryan hosting an interview training and CV development workshop to help prepare young people for the world of work.

The 15 Second City?
Glass blocks and aluminium cladding are taking shape in East London. An old drill hall and vehicle maintenance yard on the Mile End Road are being transformed to create a mixed use development of retail, cafe, flexible workspace and flats. Lots of existing fabric is retained and re-used to reduce embodied carbon while photovoltaics and a highly insulated envelope ensure low operational carbon.

Puttshack Mini Golf
HUT enjoyed an evening of mini golf with design team colleagues on our Bloomsbury listed refurbishment project. Thanks to CrEAM Engineering and congratulations to Chris at Elliot Wood on your win!

Low-Carbon Site Visit & Training
The HUT Team visited our Clerkenwell retrofit site this week. Project lead Todd described the planning background to this complex scheme and talked us through breathable and low-carbon construction build-ups as they happen. Simultaneously in the office, we continue to evolve our expertise on breathable insulation to traditional construction types with the latest Green Register training and knowledge-share across the team.

Forest Garden Blooming
HUT's Forest Garden has seen extreme weather cycles since its completion in 2020, including summer droughts. Director Rachel dropped by recently and found nature bouncing back, bedded in recycled construction aggregates, ready for spring.

Mayfair Apartment Specifications
Final specifications are underway for a luxury residential project in Mayfair. Modern bespoke joinery will sit alongside carefully-restored listed features. We are leading showroom visits to finalise upholstery choices for custom furniture throughout the apartment.

Sectional Completion in Camden
Works are almost complete at the first floor of this large multi-phase refurbishment in Camden, with daylight streaming in. Meanwhile, we're exploring options to work around complicated existing structure at higher levels to provide premium penthouse office space, and converting roof plant areas to terrace amenity space.

Clerkenwell Workplace Starts on Site
Site works have commenced on our low-carbon Clerkenwell office retrofit which maximises fabric re-use and thermal upgrades alongside an innovative breathing wall construction for improved occupant wellness. Existing timber from the strip-out process is being reused on site to form a new green roof structure.

AJ Retrofit Awards Ceremony
We had a wonderful night at the AJ Retrofit Awards ceremony. Sadly Gilray House and 210 Pentonville road didn’t win in their categories but many congratulations to Henley Halebrown and 5th Studio who swept up the prizes. Hopefully we will be back next year with more shortlisted projects.

HUT Visit Gracechurch Street
Project Architects Marta and Shashi have given the HUT team a tour of 6 Gracechurch Street, walking us through the ways this city workplace has been re-oriented for the post-pandemic landscape and inspiring our in-progress workplace schemes.

HÛT are Hiring
HÛT are looking for a dynamic & creative Part 2 Architectural Assistant to join and inspire our growing team. If you love learning new skills whilst gaining hands-on experience, and want your work to leave a positive legacy, then get in touch. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds, particularly those under-represented in the profession.

The Studio House
Planning submitted for transformation of compact garden house in Chelsea. New stepped brick volumes replace a mono-pitched roof creating highly valuable additional floorspace. Hit-and-miss brick to the building envelope allows for precise control of both privacy and overlooking in this tight urban site with an array of rooflights providing the main source of daylight.

Pentonville Road is a Finalist in the AJ Retrofit Awards 2023
210 Pentonville Road listed as finalist for Architects' Journal Retrofit Awards in the Workplace (£5 million to £10 million) category. Project is an embodiment of HUT's 4 values of reinvention, delight, patina and enrichment, with 210 Pentonville Road centred on the creative re-use of existing fabric. Pleasure to work with Curo Construction Ltd, Gardner and Theobald, Taylor Project Services, HDR & Shore Engineering.

Gilray House is a Finalist in the AJ Retrofit Awards 2023
Delighted to report that Gilray House another HUT finalist for Architects' Journal Retrofit Awards in Workplace (up to £5 million) category. Project undertaken with GAW Capital Advisors (UK) Limited, Ingleton Wood LLP, Structure Tone London, Synoptic Consulting, CAG, Climate FM and Semper Fire Engineering.

International Women’s Day
Happy International Women’s Day! HUT is a pro-female practice that champions equality and diversity. More than half of our team are women - from young designers to senior management. Aware that statistically this is a rarity in the Built Environment as Part W reveal through their data-driven research, there are still large areas of inequality within the industry – ‘an industry that routinely excludes’. A lot of work to do with the erasure and exclusion of women in discourse around architecture in both education and practice but now are going in the right direction thanks to campaigning of @partwcollective @womeninarchuk and @blackfemarc to name a few.

Leyton College 3D Design Workshop
Sketch concept models produced by Leyton College 3D Design students at a recent workshop run by HUT's Andy Whiting and Jason Lai. Students were asked to find ways of representing a number of case study buildings in a short period of time using only materials from their workshop.

‘Best Building in Shoreditch’
HUT's Curtain Road scheme, described as "the best building in Shoreditch" by Compton acquired by Aviva for £42M. HUT worked closely with Hackney & Historic England to achieve significant planning gain on a listed building, restoring heritage features, adding commuter facilities and upgrades throughout to create an exemplary net zero carbon retrofit workplace.

AJ Case Study on HUT’s Vibrant Community Garden
The @forestgarden.leytonstone features in the Architects' Journal. HUT and HOS Landscapes test out a circular approach to construction using construction waste to re-value the connection with lost natural habitats. Read the full case study here.

Farringdon Road and Iffley Road Shortlisted
We are excited that both Farringdon Road and Iffley Road have been shortlisted for the AJ Retrofit Awards 2022 in the Workplace (up to £5m) category. Thank you, Architects’ Journal. You can see the full list here.

Forest Garden wins The People’s Choice Award
We won! Congratulations to the Forest Garden team - HUT, HOS and the wonderful community of Waltham Forest for making the garden thrive. Thank you Waltham Forest Council - we’re delighted with our award. The Forest Garden puts the circular economy at the heart of the design process. The garden demonstrates how waste materials can be used to provide substrate for self-seeding wildflowers and address climate extremes.

Spitalfieds Townhouse to Workspace
Planning permission has been granted for the renovation and extension of a historic building in Spitalfields. Situated in the middle of a row of Georgian terraces the project seeks to draw on its rich historic context and surroundings whilst providing a homely and characterful office and retail space. Designs include a grand drawing room meeting space and cosy informal work environment in the attic which will mimic domestic workspaces making the transition from home to office a smooth one, post pandemic. Concept image reference from Historic England

Hatcher’s Yard
HUT have finished the Refurbishment and rebrand of an office campus in Bermondsey bringing it back onto the market post-Covid. The design includes a new, engaging communal courtyard and a public undercroft space using materials which draw on the site’s long history as a haulage depot. The proposal takes a low-waste approach and includes low-maintenance, biodiverse planting

Iffley Road Wins
HUT have received a Tom Ryland award for conservation from the Hammersmith Society. The award is for Iffley road, a former mission hall in West London which was converted into an open-plan co-working space. This Grade II listed building in a conservation area retains its elegant neo-gothic facades and decorative internal roof structure whilst having the internal space undergo a sensitive CAT A fitout. Iffley road architects are HUT up to RIBA Stage 4, Neil Davies Architects Stages 5 and 6

Vote for HUT
HUT have been shortlisted for the Waltham Forest Design Awards 2021 which celebrates and rewards quality architecture and landscape design within the Borough. The public can vote for their favourite project from the shortlist. The project with the most votes will win. So please vote for our Forest Garden! Follow this link to vote for us! @forestgarden.leytonstone @hoslandscapes @makingplaceswf @lbwalthamforest @createlondon

Planning permission granted at Hertfordshire home
Planning permission has been granted for a significant extension at a private Hertfordshire home. The design seeks to tie together the original arts and crafts style house with later contemporary additions. Handmade tiles clad the pitched roof and cascade down the walls whilst a crisp metal clad extension wraps around the ground floor rooms; better connecting the living spaces with the garden beyond

Mixed use development submitted for planning
Recently submitted for planning, this new build mixed-use development is situated on an active corner of Homerton High Street. Four richly textured, dual aspect residential units each with a setback veranda, draws from the neighbouring context while updating and unifying the terrace with new character. On the ground floor, the commercial space is to be clad in royal blue glazed brick; complementing locally listed precedent

Zoom Tutoring
Senior Architect, George was recently a guest lecturer for final year masters (MArch) students at Oxford Brookes University. Student projects explored living in a post-pandemic society; environmental degradation and the feeling of safety and community within the cities that we inhabit

Clapham South Development
HUT have achieved planning approval for 36 high quality residential dwellings in Clapham, South London. The proposal revised an existing permission to deliver a scheme that had a greater focus on quality of living space, external and internal materiality, and resident amenities in a what is a highly constrained site surrounded by other dwellings. The new character takes visual cues for the listed band stand of Clapham Common, introducing refined decorative stonework and colonnades to entrances and balconies, as well as a greater focus on refined brickwork detailing. The window configuration increases the area of daylight and outlook, whilst ensuring overlooking risk is mitigated. An intensive greening of the site brings the Common to the door step through an expansion of planted areas, wildflower green roofs and refined pathways and street furniture

Planning permission granted in The City of London
Planning permission has been granted for our office retrofit and extension in the City of London. The scheme seeks to retain the existing brick façade and introduces a more transparent retail at ground level to activate the corner site. Flexible office spaces and a communal rooftop terrace focus on sustainable principals and the project is targeting net zero carbon

Practical Completion at Farringdon Road
HÛT have completed the redevelopment and upward extension of a converted office warehouse building in Farringdon, London, delivering 14,000sqft of Cat A office and retail spaces across the seven storeys

Former 1930’s garment factory starts on site
Construction work begins at Gilray House; a former 1930’s garment factory. Works include a contemporary two storey curved metal roof extension and the extensive restoration of the building's original features

Planning consent at Finchley Road
HUT receive planning for the substantial extension and full scale refurbishment of a mixed use building on Finchley High Road in North London. The scheme includes remodelling a double fronted retail space at ground floor and basement with new residential accommodation created in an upward extension. Separated by a new first floor garden to the rear of the site, a mews house inspired development provides a further residential unit

Mode Studios Starts on Site
Works begin on site at this office space fit-out in Camden. Exposed concrete and pared-back fixtures reduce waste and give durability while feature pin-board walling and walnut ledges allow occupiers to characterise their space in a simple way

Office Campus Re-Brand
Planning approval and advertising consents have been granted for the refurbishment and rebrand of an office campus in Bermondsey. We have designed a new, engaging communal courtyard space and a public undercroft space using materials which draw on the site's long history as a haulage depot. The proposal takes a low-waste approach and includes low-maintenance, biodiverse planting. Architectural works have been developed in tandem with a new identity and signage scheme by our graphic design partners Bibliotheque

Eco-House Submitted For Planning
HÛT have submitted a planning application for an environmentally-conscious new-build house in the northwest. Working with a prior planning permission and the constraints of a plot nestled between neighbouring gardens, HÛT’s design seeks to maximise flexibility and access to provide a lifetime home for retirement. Lightweight off-site construction, local & low-waste materials, and careful regard for orientation all work towards a sustainable solution for a bespoke house, in addition to high levels of insulation and airtightness with heat recovery technology. The plan form organises circulation around the heart of the home, the kitchen & dining space, and brings the garden deck into focus when the weather permits in summertime

Plug & Play in Clerkenwell
Tenants have started to move into HUT's recently-completed micro plug and play office scheme in Farrindgon. Upgrades to this narrow building on St John Street included a roof extension to maximise office space and replacement of all internal finishes to create light and inviting spaces. The small, furnished offices offer flexible fully serviced space for small business and start-ups on short, flexible leases

Ball State Teaching
Senior architect Sophie has recorded an interview for first year students at Ball State University, USA, on what it’s like to work in practice at HUT. Part of Ball State’s “Introduction to Architecture” undergraduate module, questions were submitted by students seeking insight into the realities of qualifying and working as an architect. Questions addressed: how and why she became an architect; career progression and experience; the culture of HUT Architecture; daily routine and responsibilities; and some reflections on the value of qualification, job-seeking, impacts of Covid-19, and aspirations for the industry. HUT have many teaching links and are always keen to support young people in their understanding of the profession and the transition from education to practice

Creative Refurbishment on the Culture Mile
HUT have submitted planning for the refurbishment of a mixed use building in the City of London near Smithfield Market. Located adjacent to the new Farringdon East Crossrail Station, the scheme sits within the 'Culture Mile' and will cater to creative small-medium enterprises. Ground floor cafe space with maximised glazing will bring activity to the street scene. 15,000sqft of flexible office space includes two new extensions clad in profiled aluminium, referencing the zig-zag rhythm of the existing facade along Hayne Street. The scheme is a testbed for the client's new net zero carbon policy and employs energy-efficient servicing, natural ventilation and urban greening to roof terraces as well as exceeding requirements for commuter facilities. Living etc Feature
HÛT's De Beauvoir Townhouse has been featured in Living etc magazine. “We wanted to reimagine the everyday and familiar home, making it unique and establishing its own identity,” says architect Rachel Eccles. “The extension transforms the ground floor and the spaces that flow from it.” Read the full article here https://www.livingetc.com/spaces/interior-inspiration/modern-home-extension-ideas-241811
